On the birthday and the day of King Ramses II coronation, the sun shines directly on his statue in the inner sanctuary.Beside this great temple, there is a smaller one built by Ramses II to his beloved wife, Nefertari.

The dam produced one of the largest human-made lakes ever, Lake Nasser.
